Introduction to Health and Disabilities Outline

In this course we will be looking into issues that face People with disability, impairment or disadvantage. The four main areas of focus are that of the Physically, Intellectually, Psychiatrically and Aged fields. The term ‘disability’ traditionally means ‘unable’. This term is continually changing and the models used in diagnoses’, support and assistance, are continually changing. People in disadvantage face many of the same struggles that everyone experiences. However, the Issues that face people with disadvantage can impact greatly on their lives and can be further complicated by health struggles. Their issues are as every bit as true and real and can have a huge impact on a person’s life.

Working in this field is hard work but extremely rewarding.  A support worker may watch their client grow, develop, find well-being and empowerment. This course looks at the Issues that present patients, clients and health workers, models of treatment and an insight into the world of health, disability and disadvantage in the hope to teach how to achieve outcomes for people needing support.

This course also recognises that each student comes into this course for many different reasons, whether for general interest or whether a loved one is suffering, or to work in one of the huge variety of roles that a health supporter can become involved – this course is for You – Enjoy this Journey!
