Lesson Structure

1) Digital Video Equipment Explained:

Don’t let jargon or a fear of technology stop you.  We explain all the key terminology in this module and also look at what type of standard features you should be looking for in your camcorder and why. In this module, you will learn:

  • Camcorders, pocket cameras and smart phones explained
  • Anatomy of a camcorder
  • Useful accessories for your camcorder

 

2) Basic Camera Functions:

It’s good to know how the images are captured into your camcorder so that you can exercise more control over the creative process as you advance. In this module you’ll discover key functionality of the lens, auto focus, exposure and white balance.

3) Planning & Organising Your Shoot:

Whether you’re planning on shooting a short home movie or a Hollywood blockbuster, some simple planning will go a long way to improving the quality of your movie. In this module, you’ll learn about story boarding, shot composition and how to capture different types of footage.

4) Filming Children:

Babies and toddlers make for great subject matter when producing home videos.  In this module, we’ll specifically look at the types of footage and shots that you should take to capture your loved ones forever.  Everything from simple every day footage to birthday parties is covered in this module.

5) Filming Special Events & Holidays:

Whether it’s a holiday, wedding or special event having a movie to enjoy time and time again is worth the effort, so that you can relive those special moments with special people.  Even more so now, people are looking to archive their lives for future generations to look back on, in this module we’ll you’ll discover some key footage of special events you must record and also how to piece it all together.

6) Introduction to Video Editing:

As you progress you’ll want to exercise creative control over your videos, this is where editing suite software will come into play. In this module we’ll explore what is meant by video editing and learn how to use a very popular, yet powerful video editing software package. Specifically in this module, you’ll learn how to manipulate your footage on the timeline and how to add in titles for your videos.

7) Essential Video Editing Techniques:

In this series of video tutorials you’ll learn how to fade your footage in and out, add different transitions to various different clips and master how to trim and split your footage on the timeline. All of these techniques are the building blocks for the movies that you want to produce.

8) Intermediate Video Editing Techniques:

You’ll want your digital home videos to wow and entertain your audience so in this module, you’ll discover how to take your footage to the next level.  We’ll explore how to add in lower third graphics to your footage (lower thirds are what you see on the TV when a person’s name appears in the shot of them).  Bring life to your production with some music tracks, you’ll learn how to add music into your video productions. Finally in this section, how to add in credits and end titles to your video productions.

9) Advanced Video Editing Techniques:

As you progress and become comfortable with all of the above techniques you’ll understandably want to push yourself further. In this section you can really let your creative spirit run free, we’ll explore how to pan and crop of your footage, this neat little technique allows you to manipulate your footage as if you had someone else holding the camcorder at the time of shooting. We’ll explain how you can achieve Picture In Picture effects, you know the kind of effect that you see when a newscaster reads the news and the footage appears behind them in the frame. Finally, want to make blockbuster movies with your children or grandchildren… then you really can’t miss this tutorial. I’ll show you a home movie my 4 year old son and I made based on the classic film ‘Star Wars’… yes, we actually achieved space travel! and you can too.

10) Rendering Your Video:

Rendering your video project really means bringing all of the various components that you’ve put on your timeline together to produce one file that can then be either uploaded to the internet or authored to DVD. This is a simple process and provides you with the choice of how you want to share your footage.

11) Internet Based Video:

One of the most effective places to store your digital home movies is on the internet. Free sites like YouTube enable you to archive your footage for free but also allow you to share your video projects with family and friends across the globe. In this module, you’ll learn how to set up your own YouTube channel (it’s free and simple), how to upload video projects and share them with your family and friends.

12) How to Burn Your Video Home Project to DVD:

It’s a great way to save your video project forever… burning it to DVD.  There is a quick and simple process required to take your newly edited footage and author it to DVD.  In this section, you’ll learn how easy and simple this process is.

Assignments:

At the end of each unit there is one self-assessment test. Each test has a minimum passing score which you must achieve before you can move onto the next unit in the course. You can take each module test as many times as you like until you pass, at which point your passing results are record in our national database and contribute towards your final score.
