ASP.NET

COURSE AIMThis course provides a comprehensive introduction to ASP.NET for students wishing to further develop their understanding of, and ability to creatively use the internet. By the end of the course, the student should be able to easily understand all the major aspects of ASP.NET and use it to produce their own web applications.Pre-requisitesThis course assumes that the student has a good knowledge of basic HTML. Students must have access to a computer with internet access. Students are required to install Visual Web Developer Express Edition, this is a free download from Microsoft.WHAT IS ‘MICROSOFT.NET?Microsoft explains the concept of .NET in these words:“Microsoft® .NET is a set of Microsoft software technologies for connecting information, people, systems, and devices. It enables a high level of software integration through the use of Web services—small, discrete, building-block applications that connect to each other as well as to other, larger applications over the Internet.”Microsoft’s ‘.NET’ platform was released in 2001 as a new feature to their Windows family of products. This affects many aspects of Information Technology because Windows products are responsible for a major share of home and office computers systems and website servers on the Internet. The technology behind .NET allows programmers (often called ‘developers’) to create software programs or applications that utilise the wide spectrum of information technology resources used every day by people around the world.A NEW APPROACH TO BUILDING WINDOWS SOFTWAREThe .NET Framework simplifies Windows software development. It provides developers with a single approach to build both desktop applications - sometimes called ‘smart client applications’ - and Web-based applications. It also enables developers to use the same tools and skills to develop software for a variety of systems ranging from handheld smart phones to large server installations.Software built on the .NET Framework can be easier to deploy and maintain than conventional software. Applications can be designed to automatically upgrade themselves to the latest version. The .NET Framework can also minimize conflicts between applications by helping incompatible software components coexist.

Proficiency Award

Proficiency Award In Computer Programming

COURSE STRUCTURE To attain a proficiency award, you need to: A/ Complete assignments and pass exams for three 100 hour modules/subjects Visual Basic .Net Programming ASP.Net SQL Database Programming (see brief outlines of these three modules below) B/ 200 hrs work experience or a workplace projectYou can satisfy this by either submitting a reference from an employer or reputable colleague; or by undertaking a major programming project and submitting your work (under guidance from a tutor). MODULES Visual Basic.Net  This covers;  Introduction,  Code Theory, Objects and  Application Design. This subject has 12 lessons as follows: Introduction: Understanding the basic concept of computer programming and how it fits in with the .NET framework. Variables:  Understanding how computer programs store values and how they are accessed. Understanding conditional statements:  Understanding how conditional statements are used to effect the flow of a program. I/O handling:  Learn how to create, read and write files used by your VB.NET application. Also understand how to send information to a printer Controls and Objects – An Introduction Structured Programming using Modules: Understanding the benefits of using modules to structure your program. Properties, methods, events & classes: Understanding properties, methods and events and how they are used in classes. Inheritance: Understanding how inheritance is used in VB.NET to re-use code. Polymorphism: Understanding how to use polymorphism to perform the same functions in different ways. Using controls: Understanding the different controls in VB.NET and how to use them. Debugging:  Understanding how to identify, trap and fix errors in your program. Developing a complete VB.NET application ASP.net  This module will expand on website database development techniques and more using Microsofts ASP.NET technology. There are 11 lessons as follows: Introduction VB.NET Essentials Web Forms Web Server Controls Form Validation Classes and Namespaces Creating ASP.NET Applications ADO.NET Error Handling Email from your Applications Project: Creating an Online Store SQL for the Web  This module will expand on website database development techniques and show you how to develop very powerful web applications using Microsofts' SQL server. There are 12 lessons as follows: Introduction to Databases Fundamentals of SQL Building a database with SQL Storing & Retrieving Data Advanced SQL database access methods Database Security Using SQL in applications Cursors Stored procedures Error Handling Dynamic SQL Advice & Tips INDUSTRY PROJECT OR WORK EXPERIENCE This is the final requirement that you must satisfy before receiving your award. There are two options available to you to satisfy this requirement: Alternative 1. If you work in programming; you may submit a reference from your employer (or a reputable colleague oir client), in an effort to satisfy this industry (ie. workplace project) requirement; on the basis of RPL (ie. recognition for prior learning), achieved through your current and past work experience. The reference must indicate that you have skills and an awareness of your industry, which is sufficient for you to work in a position of responsibility. Alternative 2. If you do not work in the relevant industry, you need to undertake a project as follows. Procedure for a Workplace Project This project is a major part of the course involving the number of hours relevant to the course (see above). Although the course does not contain mandatory work requirements, work experience is seen as highly desirable. This project is based on applications in the work place and specifically aims to provide the student with the opportunity to apply and integrate skills and knowledge developed through various areas of formal study. Students will design this project in consultation with a tutor to involve industry based activities in the area of specialized study which they select to follow in the course. The project outcomes may take the form of a written report, folio, visuals or a mixture of forms. Participants with relevant, current or past work experience will be given exemption from this project if they can provide suitable references from employers that show they have already fulfilled the requirements of this project. The 200 hours may be split into two projects each of 100 hours. Alternatively, the student may wish to do one large project with a duration of 200 hours. Students will be assessed on how well they achieve the goals and outcomes they originally set as part of their negotiations with their tutor. During each 100 hours of the project, the students will present three short progress reports. These progress reports will be taken into account when evaluating the final submission. The tutor must be satisfied that the work submitted is original. If the student wishes to do one large 200 hour report, then only three progressive reports will be needed (however the length of each report will be longer). To learn how to enrol click here
